What is hydrolyzed collagen?
Hydrolyzed collagen is a very popular ingredient in skin care especially in K-beauty! In fact, our January pouches included several products formulated with hydrolyzed collagen. Today, we’re discussing everything you need to know about hydrolyzed collagen, including some common misconception you may have about it.
What is collagen?
Collagen is the main structural protein found in our bodies, particularly in our connective tissues. There are over 20 types of collagen in our bodies. As you may know, the collagen found in our skin is key to keeping the skin firm and plump. As we get older, we naturally lose collagen, leading to the presence of wrinkles and fine lines.
Hydrolyzed Collagen
Collagen itself is quite large, so it simply cannot be absorbed by the skin. However, collagen can be broken into very small peptides to create hydrolyzed collagen, allowing the peptides to better penetrate the skin. There is a common misconception out there that hydrolyzed collagen will cause the skin to produce more collagen. But it’s important to know that this claim has yet to be proven by scientists. More research is needed to support (or debunk) this claim. We hope that in the near future, we will know much more about hydrolyzed collagen’s ability or inability to produce collagen.
So then, what really is the point of hydrolyzed collagen in skin care? While it’s hard to say if hydrolyzed collagen will lead to collagen production, it still has skin care benefits that make it a wonderful ingredient! Hydrolyzed collagen is known for its great moisturizing properties, helping you to achieve moisturized and dewy skin. It’s no surprise that it’s a popular ingredient in Korean face masks!
